“The Main Event June 2nd 2002
By Barry Sheavills
Wow, is it really 10 years since we ran Europe’s First 300 mph Pass, for me it only seems like yesterday, what a day it was, up against Andy Carter!
Me in the left hand lane and Andy in the right hand lane! Both of us psyched up and both knowing we had cars capable of running 300 mph, but neither of us could have imagined what was to unfold.
We both made strong burnouts and moved forward into stage. On the hit I pulled a red light 0.398 reaction (a perfect reaction time being 0.400). So you can only imagine how psyched I was.
The run was perfect and felt really quick. After the run, Andy came over to me and said that he had heard that one of us had run over 300 mph. Neither of us knew which one of us it was, and then we heard that it was both of us! But I was the first over the finish line and in qualifying a Red light doesn’t count “This was the moment I could only have imagined since starting my Drag racing career all those years ago, the Converted title of the First to run 300 mph in Europe was mine!”
On that day, June 2nd 2002, British Motor Sport history was made:
- The First side by side 300 mph run outside the USA
- The First side by side 4 second run outside the USA
Many thanks must go to Rune and my crew for preparing me a car capable of running 300 mph. Not only one but both cars were owned by Rune and RF Motorsport. This was a magnificent achievement and one I am proud to have been part of.
Finally, good luck to all at RF Motorsport for the 2012 season and Risto, Jari and Duncan. Be Fast Be Safe!Regards Barry, see you at the track
